Eastern Shore Poultry Farmer Reduces Energy Consumption By 33 Percent With Help of Be SMART Program

 Posted: JULY 3

Jennifer RhodesCentreville, MD – DHCD’s Be SMART energy efficiency program has helped an Eastern Shore woman reduce energy consumption on her poultry farm by 33 percent.

The Be SMART program works with local partners and contractors to provide financing for energy efficiency improvements in homes and small businesses across Maryland.  Funding through the U.S. Department of Energy Better Buildings program allows financing – for items such as HVAC systems, insulation, windows, draft stopping and duct sealing, appliances and fixtures and water heating equipment.

Jennifer Rhodes, Delmarva Poultry Industry president and owner of Deerfield Farms, received $79,000 to support ventilation upgrades and the use of installation of electronic control units. She received the grants through Be SMART and the Maryland Energy Administration’s Mathias Ag program, which provides grants to farms and business projects in the agriculture sector.

In a video blog, after 25 years of farming, Ms. Rhodes quoted “We’ve got to come to a balance, where we all work together. I want a clean environment, clean water … I want to still be able to farm.”

In addition to operating and owning the poultry farm, she also serves on the board of Mid-Atlantic Farm Credit and is an advisor for the University of Maryland Extension.
